ABOUT THE JIAS SCHOLARSHIPS

Each year the JIAS National Office awards scholarships to Jewish immigrant students across the country.  There are three categories of scholarships.

John Hirsch Scholarships for the Arts and the Performing Arts

John Hirsch, one of Canada's most distinguished theatre directors, arrived in Canada as an immigrant in 1947 at the age of 17.  Born in Siofok, Hungary, he was the only member of his immediate family to survive the Holocaust.  His love of theatre and the arts blossomed at an early age, and he grew to become renowned as a theatre director for some of the best productions across Canada.  On his death he made a bequest to JIAS which has been used to set up a Scholarship Fund to support students in the Arts and Performing Arts.

The Michael and Marta Herling Award

In 1994 Marta and Michael Herling of Montreal, long-time supporters of JIAS and Jewish immigrants to Canada, established a national scholarship award.  Marta Herling passed away a few years ago, but Michael Herling continues to support JIAS students in both their names.

General Scholarships

In 1987, JIAS Canada was the recipient of an anonymous bequest which was used to set up a Scholarship Fund for Jewish immigrant students pursing general post-secondary studies at the university or college level.  Over the years, additional donations have been made to the JIAS National Office to enhance this Scholarship Fund.  We are proud to be able to recognize and support the achievement of newcomer students in this way.

We are most grateful to all those who have made it possible for us to help Jewish immigrant students to further their education.  We are very aware that these scholarships not only help newcomers financially, but also recognize their importance as future builders of Canadian Jewish communities.

EDMONTON IMMIGRANT STUDENT WINS SECOND JIAS SCHOLARSHIP

Sergiy Morgovsky has won a scholarship from Jewish Immigrant Aid Services of Canada (JIAS) for the second year in a row.

Sergiy arrived from Ukraine in January 2000, and soon achieved his bachelor’s degree in linguistics at the University of Alberta.  Working part-time with mentally challenged people in a local group home led him to a shift in his career goal.  This fall, he will complete a second bachelor’s degree in Rehabilitation Medicine.

Sergiy was courageous in choosing to settle in Edmonton, with no family or friends in Canada. With the tenacity of a pioneer, he asked for little assistance, and was soon able to establish himself well enough to sponsor his wife to join him from Ukraine. They are now expecting a child.

WINDSOR PROUD OF ITS FIRST JIAS SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEE

Maria Rakhoutina was born in Moscow and immigrated to Canada in 1999.  Having experienced anti-Semitism in Russia, she came to Canada with her husband with hopes of a richer and fuller Jewish life.  They have immersed themselves in the Jewish community, volunteering their time to teach computers at the Jewish Community Centre.  Maria is involved in many aspects of the Windsor Jewish Community including being a member of the Board of Directors of the Windsor Jewish Federation and Community Centre  and a Member of the Board of Temple Beth El.  She has always had a passion for accounting and has been accepted to the University of Windsor Bachelor of Commerce program, hoping to continue after her degree and become a Chartered Accountant.
