Jewish Child and Family
Services Winnipeg Hosts Open House to Welcome Newcomers
On a warm Sunday afternoon the senior's lounge at the Asper Campus
was a buzz of many languages as newcomers socialized at an open
house hosted by Jewish Child and family Service. The event,
which took place on July 25th, was organized to welcome new
immigrant families who had come to Winnipeg in the past two years.
It was an informal afternoon of introductions and mingling where
families could meet each other. JCFS organizers, Adele Lewin
and Lola Baral were very pleased that over 150 people came out and
seemed to enjoy themselves as much.
The formal part of the afternoon was the distribution of the Jewish
Immigrant Aid Services of Canada (JIAS) scholarships to help
newcomers in furthering their studies in their chosen fields.
Leslie Wilder, a past president of JCFS and the current president of
JIAS, explained to the audience that the scholarships are based on
high scholastic achievement, financial need and demonstrated
involvement in Jewish community activities. Eight newcomers
from Winnipeg qualified to receive JIAS scholarship this year.
