Immigrant Views

Reflections on life in Argentina

FROM OUR SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

(Submitted by Jonathan Getjman, recipient of a John Hirsch Scholarship for the Performing Arts)

Being an immigrant is a whole new experience.  Being an immigrant is about experiencing.

For me as an immigrant, “culture” is no longer a barely defined term, it is a moving wall built by bricks of all colours and shapes, that sometimes amazes me because of its strength, and sometimes scares me, because of its size.

An immigrant doesn’t know if he wants to be a part of that huge conglomeration that looks so different from what he’s left behind. An immigrant doesn’t know if he’s ever going to be a part of that wall. He doesn’t even know if he’s ever going to be able to be a part of that wall.

If he’s lucky, if he belongs to something greater than a territory, if he’s open enough to see the spaces in that wall, then the bricks become people. The wall becomes ceiling, becomes floor. As the immigrant lets go and accepts its uniqueness and every other’s, the immigrant finds strength. The same strength that made him leave all what he left behind. The immigrant takes pride in building the wall, and the story repeats.

There is a big and perhaps unwritten part of Judaic history that is about migrating. And there is another big part of Judaic tradition that is about helping each other.

Thank you for letting me see that no matter the language, weather, custom or distance, I am not alone.

Jonathan Getjman is pursuing a major in Classical Composition at the School of Music, University of Manitoba. He immigrated to Canada from Argentina in March 2003

(Submitted by Maria Rakhoutina, recipient of a JIAS General Scholarship)

When I came to Canada three and one half years ago, I decided to become an accountant. Accounting has always been an area of great interest to me. I started working for a small computer firm as a bookkeeper. As well as learning through my working experience, I have attended evening courses in accounting at our local community college.

The more I worked and studied the more it strengthened my resolve to attain an accounting designation. Last summer I decided to apply to the University of Windsor. Upon acceptance I left my job, which I really enjoyed, at the Fitness Club, to become a full time student in the School of Business. My plan is to complete the 2-year program, for a B. Comm. degree and continue to work toward a Chartered Accountant designation.

Although I have not decided exactly what I want to do after reaching my goal, my first thought is to use my skills in some way in Israel, perhaps for a large accounting firm. It would give my husband and I and our future children an opportunity to learn Hebrew, to experience family life in Israel and to fulfill a very strong need we have to support my fellow Jews.

Maria Rakhoutina is currently enrolled in the Odette School of Business at the University of Windsor.  She emigrated from Russia in December 1999
