RECOGNIZING JEWISH POVERTY IN
CANADA
A Call To Action
By Sandy Shuler
Report on the AJFCA Canada
Conference
This conference,
recently held in Ottawa, November 27-29 was a valuable opportunity
for over 80 delegates from Victoria to Halifax to gather to discuss
this compelling issue.
Representatives
from Jewish Family Serving Organizations, Jewish Immigrant Aid
Services and Federations coast to coast listened to a variety of
presentations on what Jewish poverty means, it’s implications for
being Jewish, and how best to address it.

A number of break
out workshops focused on specific issues such as domestic abuse and
vulnerable women and children, seniors and quality of life issues,
the needs of newcomers to Canada and employment issues for those
most vulnerable.
Former NDP Leader
Ed Broadbent cited child poverty statistics for Canada and commented
on our progress to date in dealing with the issue. Keynote speaker
David Bornstein, author and social entrepreneur demonstrated new,
creative ways those around the world have used to address a variety
of social problems. Bernie Farber, CEO of Canadian Jewish Congress
offered strategies for advocacy in his presentation.
Conference
delegates became informed about Jewish poverty in Canada, had the
opportunity to share experiences and best practices, and dialogued
about future initiatives on a local, regional and national basis.
Those who participated commented on the value of this conference in
bringing lay community representatives, professional staff and
federation leaders to the same table for shared discussion. All
involved hope that this inaugural conference will be just the
beginning of similar future initiatives.
