Winnipeg Welcomes Newcomers with Programs, Services and Parties

Jewish Child and Family Service in Winnipeg has been very actively involved in helping newcomers integrate and resettle in Winnipeg.

SUBMITTING A TAX FORM

A workshop on preparing their Canadian tax form was held in February. The group consisted of recently arrived newcomers who had not filled out a Canadian tax form. The facilitator spent time on familiarizing them with the tax form, discussing commonly used tax deductions and locating places to have your tax form prepared.

ESL FOR NEW MOMS

English classes have been set up for women who are stay at home moms with babies.  The opportunity to improve their English language skills is relatively limited for new moms. This class takes place on Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons.

  FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT

Another of our Agency ongoing series of seminars on Finance and Money Management Seminar  is  being planned. Topics include; basic income tax, budgeting, insurance, credit card information and buying/leasing a car or house. This program is held  at least four times a year.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

A number of newcomers have applied for loans through the Asper Helping hand Initiative that is available for Jewish individuals and families who are experiencing a temporary financial hardship.

PARTY TIME

“Welcome to Winnipeg” program will be held April 9th where there will be many activities for families to enjoy while they learn about the community. Music and crafts have been organized for the children.  The Rady Jewish Community Centre will also welcome our newcomers and give an introduction about the facility and activities available.  This   program is co-sponsored with the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg Young Adult Division.

HOLIDAYS

With the assistance of JCFS synagogues in our community continue to reach out and invite newcomers to holiday events.   Purim is a perfect example where many of our newcomers enjoyed carnivals at various synagogues while meeting and networking with community members. There are plans to send Passover food hampers to new immigrant families and to invite new families to private Seders or the community-wide Seder.
