Innovative Programming from
JIAS Montreal

Agency Showcase

Jewish newcomers to Montreal received information on a wide variety of programs and services on March 19 at a showcase of the city's Jewish community agencies and programs, organized by JIAS Montreal. Visitors obtained details about education at the elementary and high school levels; summer camps for children; career counselling and job opportunities; and social, cultural and recreational activities, including those geared to seniors.

Among the participants in the showcase were many of Montreal's leading schools, day camps, social organizations and cultural institutions.

Women’s Club

When the process of immigrating and resettling becomes especially stressful for women, JIAS Montreal’s Women’s Club steps forward to extend a helping hand. Launched in late 2004, the Women’s Club revolves around the basic yet effective principle that insightful conversation in an informal setting is the best way to start solving almost any problem.

In many cases, women who have recently immigrated engage in discussions with local experts on a wide array of subjects. These include career opportunities (sessions with a TAV Institute representative), the social aspects of immigration (psychologist, community worker), Montreal’s Jewish community (tour of the JCC), medical matters (family physician), breast cancer (a CLSC representative) and healthy eating (a nutritionist from the Jewish General Hospital). Even workshops on cooking and art therapy are part of the lively mix.

However, the newcomers—married and single alike—often find that simply sharing experiences with one another is an ideal way to discover that they’re not alone in feeling disoriented by the big move to another country. By chatting with one another and with women who have successfully integrated into life in Montreal, they gain confidence as they become more familiar with the city’s social, linguistic, cultural and medical mosaic.

JIAS Montreal’s Women’s Club is much more than courses and meetings: It’s friends embracing friends to make the entire community stronger.

Art Program for Children

With the collaboration of the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts, JIAS

Montreal has been organizing art classes for children between the ages of 3 and 11. The program is run by Poli Wilhelm, an artist and fine arts teacher who arrived from Argentina in 2004.
