Canadian Communities - Hamilton, Ontario Hamilton is a small city on Lake Ontario, approximately one hour by car from Toronto (longer in the rush hour). Neighbouring cities are Ancaster, Dundas, Waterdown, Stoney Creek and Burlington. The population of Hamilton is approximately 450,000. The chief industry of the city is steel. Mc. Master University offers an excellent range of courses, but is particularly know for its Medical School. In addition Mohawk Community college has an outstanding reputation. Hamilton Place, home to the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, offers the ultimate in performance standards to audiences and performers alike and attracts world class artists. The Jewish community consists of approximately 4,500 people most of whom live in West Hamilton, Dundas and Ancaster. The majority of the members of the Jewish community are professionals or own small businesses. There are three synagogues, two days schools, a yeshiva, a highschool midrasha, two afternoon Hebrew schools and Kollel. The beautiful Jewish Community Centre houses, among other things, a Day Camp, Jewish Social Services, and the Jewish Federation. Other community services available are a senior apartment building, Shalom Village, a nursing home, the Beth Tikvah group for special individuals, a nursery school and a kosher food bank. The community boasts vibrant chapters of Hadassah, Bnai Brith, Emunah Women and Ort, to name just a few of the organizations which are active in the area. The city of Hamilton has a kosher butcher and a kosher bakery. Our Jewish Social Services carries out resettlement work for Jewish Immigrant Aid Services. We have welcomed people from Israel, the former Soviet Union, Iran, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Montreal, South Africa and the United States. Those who chose Hamilton do so often because they want to be in a smaller city but not too far from a large city (Toronto).
