Calgary, Alberta

The largest city in Alberta, Calgary is the home of the world-famous Calgary Exhibition and Stampede and is ideally situated as a “base” to explore the natural, cultural and historical wonders of Alberta. Home to much of the Canadian oil and gas industry, Calgary is a vibrant modern city filled with skyscrapers and modern amenities. The city has taken care to ensure that numerous “green” areas are easily accessible, combining the best of both worlds.

The City of Calgary has a population of over 1 million and lies at an altitude of 1,049 m. The climate in Calgary is one of change. There are four distinct seasons to enjoy. There can be differences in weather patterns from one side of the city to the other during any season. The temperature can range from 30C in the summer to -30C degrees in the winter. Alberta is blessed with the greatest number of hours of sunshine per year of any of the Canadian provinces. During the winter months, Calgary is often faced with the arrival of an unexpected Chinook, raising temperatures by as much at 20 degrees in one day and causing spring-like conditions.

As Canada’s energy capital and Western Canada’s business capital, Calgary is now home to the second largest concentration of corporate head offices in the nation. While Calgary’s economy has been primarily shaped by the resource sector, its aggressive diversification efforts have resulted in the growth and development of the technology, tourism, manufacturing and service sectors.

All that is great about Calgary is reflected in its Jewish community. Jews have lived in Calgary for over 100 years. The 8,000+ strong community is served by a beautiful Jewish Community Centre which offers a full range of programs and activities for infants through senior adults. There are two day schools, a number of synagogues and community organizations.
