Canadian Communities - Calgary, Alberta The largest city in Alberta, Calgary is home of the world-famous Calgary Exhibition and Stampede and is ideally situated as a "base" to explore the natural, cultural and historical wonders of Alberta. Home to much of the Canadian oil and gas industry, Calgary is a vibrant modern city filled with skyscrapers and modern amenities. The City of Calgary has a population of roughly 850,000 and lies at an altitude of 1,049 m. The climate in Calgary is one of change and there are four distinct seasons to enjoy. There can be differences in weather patterns from one side of the city to the other during any season. The temperature can range from 30C in the summer to -30C in the winter. Alberta is blessed with the greatest number of hours of sunshine per year of any of the Canadian provinces. During the winter months, Calgary is often blessed with the arrival of an unexpected Chinook, raising temperatures by as much at 20 degrees in one day and causing spring-like conditions. As Canadas energy capital, and Western Canadas business capital, Calgary is now home to the second largest concentration of corporate head offices in the nation. While Calgarys economy has been primarily shaped by the resource sector, its aggressive diversification efforts have resulted in the growth and development of the technology, tourism, manufacturing and service sectors.
